Mangroves for the Future
S4S implemented an ecosystem based project at Port Launay mangrove Ramsar site in collaboration with Mangroves for the Future and the Port Glaud Environment Club (PGEC). The project aimed to address various issues such as understanding and capacity building of community vis-à-vis Climate change and biodiversity. S4S has partnered with the Bel Ombre Action Team on a project to involve community members more in decision making and governance of coastal resources. So far we have had several meetings and workshops with the community, including a workshop on climate change and coastal erosion in July, 2015, as well as tackling beach erosion at Anse Marie Laure and conducting a community vulnerability and capacity assessment. The project was being funded by Mangroves for the Future. |
S4S has worked on a project to promote sustainable management of the Port Launay mangrove in collaboration with Port Glaud Environment Club, Constance Ephelia Resort of Seychelles and the Ministry of Energy, Environment and Climate Change. The project was meant to help the community and their partners continue to protect this vibrant ecosystem, but explore ways to also benefit economically from it, sustainably.
One of the big activities we worked on was the construction of a boardwalk which created a loop trail from the road up towards the waterfall through the forest, and back down along the road. The boardwalk have created many opportunities for educational eco-tours. We now await for the board work signs to be installed. |
S4S Wetland Day Activity at Port Launay a Great Success
January 2016 To commemorate World Wetland day 2016, a group of 89 active club members from Port Glaud Environment Club, Seychelles Heritage Foundation Club, Manglier wildlife club and other Wildlife clubs alongside several organizations (Sustainability for Seychelles, Constance Ephelia Resort and Department of Environment) got together for a mangrove nursery restoration and wetland safari at Port Launay Mangrove in Port Glaud. The day started at Ephelia with a briefing on mangrove restoration and different types of mangrove trees, and a tour of Ephelia's mangrove restoration nursery. Then after planting 400 mangrove seedlings, the kids took turns kayaking, visiting the waterfall and doing a mangrove safari. Big thanks to Port Glaud Environment Club members Rennick, Anthony & Ashley, Ms. Valdana, Ms. Christel, Vanessa and Miss Christel who helped to lead all of the group activities and make sure everyone stayed safe and no litter was left behind. Thanks to everyone else who participated and helped out! |

Biodiversity Assessment of Port Launay Mangroves
One of the first activities we undertook was a study to assess the state of the Port Launay mangrove – in terms of the biodiversity that can be found there, and any existing threats to this ecosystem. This study was undertaken by Dr. Elvina Henriette, and will serve as a baseline and guideline for mangrove monitoring - visit our website to download your copy of the report. |
Engaging civil society in sustainable waste management
2014
S4S are helping communities to set up their own Community Based Organisation (CBO). A CBO is a group of people that live in the same community and join together to make a difference.
Kelly, the Greek master’s student, conducted research with S4S on CBOs and organised a series of interviews with the CBO leaders to find out what their strengths and weaknesses were.

CBO Good Governance Training
March 2014 A workshop on climate change was held on March 29th, 2014, on Cerf Island and this laid the ground work for future workshops. The workshop was attended by 26 CBO members from 13 different groups who resolved to work and collaborate together. The workshop for CBO leaders included topics such as on environmental laws and citizenship. |
CBO Workshop
August 2013 La Digue CBO Networking Trip Environmental leaders made history on August 3rd 2013 with the first CBO (Community-based Organisation) networking event in Seychelles designed to help leaders get to know one another and also convinced Diguois to start up their own group with support from S4S and the GEF small grants programme. |
Port Glaud Environment Club
An action plan workshop was held with Port Glaud Environment Club (PGEC). A new MFF proposal has been submitted for funding consideration: its focus is on empowering the local community to become more involved in protection of the mangrove, as well as to improve livelihoods. One of the proposed activities is to build a boardwalk on the community side of the road. Keep an eye out for it. |
Bel Ombre Fishermen’s Association
A new action plan for BOAT (Bel Ombre Fishermen’s Association) was compiled by members and S4S, based on their strategic plan and on availability of a small grant through MFF. The Bel Ombre Project aimed to help the community become more involved in sustainable development decision-making. This project, funded by the EU, is now closed but lives on thanks to S4S’s efforts. Bel Ombre now has its very own community based organisation (CBO) called the Bel Ombre Action Team (BOAT), headed up by Marie-May Bastienne. BOAT has an active presence in the district and recently cleaned up one of its heritage sites near Danzil. S4S will continue to support their efforts with help from our GEF small grant project. |
UNISEY Environmental Laws and Citizenship
S4S helped Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles develop and deliver a module on environmental laws and citizenship at the UniSey school of business management. The initiative was funded by the GEF biodiversity project. The course referred to a new booklet published by WCS on environmental laws and citizenship – for a copy please contact us. The course was offered to wildlife club leaders and other teachers as well as some environmental officers from MEE, and can be offered again upon request from other groups.
