Greening the Prisons
In 2014, S4S conducted a small project for the Seychelles prison located at Montagne Posee with the support of the Australian Direct Aid Program (DAP). The goal was to make the prison more sustainable by reducing its carbon footprint through its consumption of electricity and treated water. Funding from the project was used to organised green training workshop for prison inmates and for purchasing equipment.
The Seychelles Energy Commission conducted an energy audit and determined that the best way to reduce the electricity consumption of the prison would be to change over to more energy efficient security lighting (which accounts for a large portion of energy use at the prison).

S4S has also partnered with several other NGOs to help the prison go green and become more sustainable. Funding was obtained from Liaison-Unit of Non-Governmental Organisations of Seychelles (LUNGOS) to the Environment and Natural Resources Commission and was used to help develop the skills of inmates through training and rehab sessions focusing on carpentry (using pallets), rainwater plumbing, sustainable agriculture, arts & crafts and habitat restoration.

Partnership with Four Seasons
Ephelia Hotel - Improving Biodiversity Management
Through this project, S4S helped Ephelia develop environmental education and awareness materials for their staff and clients, and closer ties with the local community and other stakeholders concerned with protection of local biodiversity and habitats. The project received rave reviews from the UNDP/GEF office and featured regularly in site visits for visiting consultants as a successful example of partnership between the private sector, local community, government and NGOs. A mangrove management plan was produced under the project but this remains to be formally launched. S4S has applied to MFF for funding to support implementation of the plan. |
"Footprints", in-flight video on being an eco-tourist in Seychelles
Since the beginning of July 2010, Air Seychelles has been airing a short in-flight video on how to be an eco-tourist. The video was produced by Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S) in collaboration with Air Seychelles, Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), Constance Ephelia Resort and GreenHut Productions.
The 5 minute film, which is available in English and French, gives arriving visitors tips on how to reduce energy and water use and waste while on holiday and advises them on things to do, buy and see that will contribute to environmental, economic and social sustainability in Seychelles.
The project was funded by the National Climate Change Committee with United Nations Development Programme /Project Coordinating Unit (UNDP/PCU).

Sustainable Homes Project
Sustainability for Seychelles (S4S) has worked in collaboration with the Public Utilities Company (PUC) and Seychelles Energy Commission (SEC) and other partners on a pilot project to study the socio-economic impacts of sustainable living. The project involved helping three economically vulnerable families adopt more eco-friendly practices at home, improve their quality of life and save money. Funding was provided by a grant from Liaison-Unit of Non-Governmental Organisations of Seychelles (LUNGOS) and forms part of economic reform social programme of the government of Seychelles. |
The project started with a water and energy audit of three homes of vulnerable families who were willing to adopt more eco-friendly practices at home so as to improve their quality of life and save money. A meeting was held with each family to identify their current practices and where improvements can be made. The second stage focused on installing new equipment, such as solar water heaters, energy efficient appliances/light bulbs, rainwater harvesting systems etc. and setting up or improving their home garden.
The homes was monitored by S4S to gauge whether there was a reduction in energy and water bills and to understand the family's views on whether adopting sustainable living practices have helped improve their quality of life. The results of this project has provide more insights into the benefits and challenges of sustainable living in Seychelles. A media program accompanied the project to encourage more families to adopt sustainable living practices. S4S has also produced a poster promoting sustainable living which was funded by the National Climate Change Committee (NCCC).
