Waste Management & Recycling
Waste Workshop for Businesses and Journalists
In September and November 2015, S4S hosted workshops for businesses and journalists respectively, focused on sustainable waste management in Seychelles. The aim of the workshops was to help businesses and the media understand the challenges with waste management facing Seychelles as a small island state, and become familiar with some of the ongoing initiatives in the country to reduce, re-use and recycle waste.
Many thanks to our partners from government (LWMA and MEECC) and civil society (CEPS, Seychelles media association, SCCI and Hunt Deltel) for their support and assistance. The workshops were part of the S4S GEF SGP project, “Engaging Civil Society in Sustainable Waste Management”.

S4S Teaming us with SYHA on Waste Issues
S4S has been partnering with the youth group SYAH (SIDS Youth AIMS Hub) – Seychelles to promote better waste management. S4S supported the SYAH no plastic bag campaign by helping with a workshop for youth and importing 1000 cloth bags. SYAH members helped us with a TV advert to promote recycling of PET bottles and cans. We participated in the Bann Zil Prop clean up at La Retraite in November 2015, and the Marine Debris Challenge at Bel Ombre (together with our friends from the Bel Ombre Fishermen Association and Bel Ombre Action Team). We plan to carry on the good partnership through coming years, joining our strengths to help Seychelles reduce the amount of waste on the islands.

Waste Outreach For Schools
S4S outreach assistant Maria Boniface initiated a waste outreach program in March 2016 for schools, starting with Baie Lazare primary school, in collaboration with WiseOceans. A fun afternoon was had by all as kids from P5-P6 learned about how litter from land affects life in the oceans. The kids created signboards to put around the school and community to urge everyone not to litter. |
Plastic Bag Campaign with SYAH
We are supporting SYAH the youth group for sustainable development campaign to get people to stop using plastic bags. Check out our new re-usable bags!!! A collaborative effort with SYAH to support their SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS campaign! Funded by the GEF Small Grants Program.

Recycled Jewelry and Crafts
In June 2015 we partnered with WASO (Women in Solidarity and Action) on two workshops facilitated by Mutindi Rachel from the IOC Islands project. About 20 people were trained in techniques for making jewellery and other crafts out of waste materials like paper, cans, etc. It was really great, and since then we have helped APANA at Baie Lazare run a follow up workshop for community members to share what they learned in the WASO training. We will do another follow up workshop in Port Glaud.

Composting in Seychelles
S4S produced a composting guide with the purpose of inspiring everyone to live sustainably – whether you live in a flat or on a farm because by choosing to compost, you can divert 50% of your total waste away from the landfill. With the basic principles of the booklet, you will find that composting is easy and fun!

E-WASTE – Mobile Phone Recycling
S4S partnered with local companies setting up a system to collect used and old mobile phones for recycling. Each company will be given a bin to accept donations from the public. When their bins are full they will call one of the designated e-waste/scrap metal companies to collect. See news article 17-09-2015 Seychelles News Agency - Getting rid of your old mobile? ‘Sustainability for Seychelles’ is collecting e-waste in special bins |
Recycling Bins for PET & Cans
S4S promotes the recycling of PET bottle and aluminium cans. S4S has bought 12 bins and placed stickers on them, to encourage citizens to CHOOSE to segregate their waste into specific recycle bins. The PET specific bins were distributed around town on Mahe and also on Praslin. |
Recycling - Take Away Box Alternative
One of the major projects S4S has been supporting was the move to seek an alternative to polystyrene takeaway boxes, initiated by the Praslin CBO. With the help of 3 takeaways on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, S4S has been able to test a biodegradable sugarcane based take away box . In June 2015, S4S launched the Eco box demonstration at the Praslin Expo on Praslin. The boxes were made of sugarcane fibre. This was done in collaboration with the Praslin CBO and with the help of Minister Adam and SBC radio. Both Ministers Adam and Dogley confirmed that they support this campaign and will help to remove the tax on biodegradable boxes. |

Improving Civil Society Participation in Sustainable Waste Management
S4S received a grant from GEF/SGP and implemented a series of activities to engage civil society in sustainable waste management. One key component of the project was to empower community members to participate more actively in sustainable development decision-making, including about issues related to waste management. Our strategy was to help communities setup community based organisations (CBOs) and to work with these CBOs to create an action plan and implement their activities. We have worked with groups from Bel Ombre, Grand Anse Mahe, Port Glaud, Praslin and La Digue. We have expanded our network to also help existing groups in Roche Caiman, Plaisance, Les Mamelles and St. Louis.
|
The project also involved waste education, and demonstration projects on composting, crushed glass and e-waste. Through the project we were able to support waste related initiatives by partner organisations – we sponsored the Eko-Ver competition on waste and creativity at the Natural History Museum as well as the Visual Arts school project on waste and fashion.
Waste Task Force
Thanks to our grant from the GEF small grants program, S4S has set up a civil society waste task force to look at how non-state actors can play a more active role in sustainable waste management. The first step has been to gather more information about civil society views and practices. Two reports are now available: one is a study of The Status of Waste Management in the Seychelles, and the other is a study of resident’s views and practices vis a vis waste and sustainable living in general named 3 R’s Survey. Both reports are available on the website. Please contact us if you are interested in joining the waste task force.
Glass Recycling/Crushing
In November 2009, S4S officially launched a project to promote the collection and re-use of glass waste in Seychelles. The project was being financially supported by a grant of SR 2,500,000 from the Regional Programme for the Sustainable Management of the Coastal Zones of the Countries of the Indian Ocean Countries (ReCoMaP) funded by the European Union (EU).
The aim of the project was to divert glass waste from the dumping site at Providence on Mahé and put it to good use, safely, as construction fill or as raw material for artisanal crafts. The main target group for glass waste collection was hotels and restaurants and other organisations involved in the use of glass. The project helped hotels and restaurants improved their sustainability rating.
ReCoMaP covered the initial 18 months to run the pilot project and after it was expected that the project will become self-sustaining through the sale of processed glass, if sufficient supply can be sourced to meet demand. |
S4S launched an awareness campaign targeting hotels and restaurants and other organisations involved in the use of glass, with staff being trained in how the glass sorting system works. Glass waste collection bins were provided to participating organizations willing to sort and donate their glass waste, while larger establishments, such as Tourism Resorts, with large quantities of glass waste rent a skip for glass from STAR (Tel: 386 060)
The Glass will be stored in a designated at Anse Royale and crushed to gravel size, with the aim of being used as construction fill by local government agencies and private contractors. The crushed glass is also safe for use as decorative gravel or as a raw material for crafts such as decorative cement pots, tiles, etc.

Update September 2013
Our crushed glass project was displayed at the National Expo. We did a workshop earlier the same year at SIT with masons and artists to show how crushed glass can be used in cement work, and the crushed glass project was highlighted at the expo. |
A number of project partners have been identified by S4S: Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Transport (MENRT); Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA); STAR Seychelles; local community, particularly Anse Royale; local importers of glass products such as Trois Freres Distillery and Seybrew; hotels and restaurants; other NGOs like Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association (SHTA) and the Ecotourism Society of Seychelles (TESS); and local industries who will crush the glass and use it in construction, such as United Concrete Products of Seychelles (UCPS).
